Cannabis preparations in medicine – What science really knows so far
In Switzerland, the use of cannabis is clearly regulated. While recreational use remains restricted, access to medicinal cannabis has been noticeably simplified since 2022 – an important step for patients and the healthcare system.
Cannabis with a THC content of more than 1% is considered in Switzerland as narcotic and is generally prohibited. Possession and consumption in a recreational context remain punishable – consumption can be punished with a Administrative fine of CHF 100 be punished. Medical cannabis
Significant progress was made on August 1, 2022 implemented: since then doctors in Switzerland have been allowed to prescribe medicinal cannabis directlywithout the need for a special permit from the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH). This simplifies care considerably – especially for patients with chronic pain, spasticity or other treatment-resistant illnesses.

Doctors are obliged to document treatment data anonymously. However, the production, import, distribution and cultivation of medicinal cannabis remain subject to authorization and are authorized by Swissmedic strictly monitored.
Despite the legal opening, there are still challenges: There are still reservations among doctors, the costs are not covered by health insurance companies and many patients report high prices.
